Cheddar Jalapeno Turkey Burgers

At my house, we like beef. We just do. While we appreciate grass fed and the fancier like, we’re not picky. But our wallets are. And so are our waistlines. So while there are few things I personally love eating like a perfectly cooked and seasoned juicy beef burger (Charlotte folks, Savor has one of my very favorites followed closely by Pike’s); I love experimenting with other leaner ground meats and adding different flavors and ingredients to the meat to deliver the same punch that beef contenders do. While lamb, bison, and chicken have all taken a turn on the patty-go-round, turkey is our favorite and most used. Last night I grilled up some huge juicy ones (mmmmm… Huge. Juicy.) flavored with sharp cheddar, chili powder and finely diced jalapeno. In the middle of a crazed week, we were grilling these at 10:00, but the result, topped with sliced avocado, salsa verde and kale made the later bedtime completely worthwhile. Oh. And I forgot to wear gloves again. I also forgot to wash my hands. Again. Before contact removal. Again.

2 pounds ground turkey
1 sweet onion diced
1 jalapeno finely diced
A bunch fresh cilantro chopped
2/3 cup grated sharp cheddar
4 garlic cloves minced
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons paprika
Sea salt
Cracked black pepper
Salsa verde (I love Target’s brand… especially with coupons… mmhmmmm)
Chopped kale
Whole wheat burger buns

Combine all ingredients except avocado, kale and salsa. Mix with hands and form into patties (I made 8, but sizing can vary upon preference). Grill over charcoal, making sure both sides get generous char. Remove from grill and top with kale, avocado and salsa verde and condiments of choice.
