I’m really into tea right now. Like, as of today. I decided that I needed to rid myself of my years long diet soda habit, but I hate coffee. Hate. Coffee. And wanted to find a more natural caffeine replacement. Enter tea. Which I also hate. But not anymore. I started the day in a grand fashion, grabbing a black of basic black tea from the work kitchen, filling a cup with hot water, letting it steep, taking a sip, burning my tongue, hating everything about what was happening, asking David what I should do, throwing it away, trying a black tea with orange and sweet spice, finishing that, making a cup of green tea, thinking that it tastes like piss water, finishing it, then on my lunch break going to Target for tea K-Cups (lemongrass and spearmint) and then Trader Joe’s for two boxes of bagged teas (Earl Grey ‘cuz I’m fancy and pomegranate white tea. So, yeah, I’m really into tea. I’m feeling pretty great about the whole situation, and I’m hoping the affinity for it will come later.
Growing up we rarely drank soda. At all. When we’d go to our friends’, the Grahams, house we were allowed Fresca, and drive thrus meant Sprite, sleepovers with my grandparents meant grape soda (blech) or caffeine free Diet Dr. Pepper, and every so often we’d have some in the fridge. Oprah declared soda “candy in a can” at one point, which while sounding wonderful to me, did not so much to my mom and dad. We would request to have a “can” now and then. In my 8th grade geometry class, which I despised with my whole person, we had an exercise about defining things (I’m sure this was related to proofs, which make my skin feel itchy just thinking about) and were asked to define why we called soda what we did. “Soft drink,” because they does not contain liquor (in those days, anyway); “Coke” because of brand identification. “I call it a Can,” I said, enthusiastically, “because it comes in a can!” Somehow that was wrong, and I got a “none correct,” on the assignment. Bitches. Naturally, when I got to college and could purchase my own groceries, my affinity for “cans” escalate quickly to 3-4 Diet Pepsi Jazz Black Cherry French Vanilla daily. Those, sadly, are no longer in production and live on only in my dreams. But it’s no big deal since I’m super into tea now.
I’m also really into yoga right now. I mean, I have been for about two years now, but I’ll be into it for a couple months then take a few month break, and since I took a class last night after 6 weeks off, I’m really into it again. Yoga people (I so dearly hate the word “yogi” nearly as much as I hate the word “foodie,” which wouldn’t even be grammatically correct, it would be “foody,” singular, but I digress) drink tea, I imagine, so now it’s come full circle. I’m feeling quite zen, whole and healthy as a result of the entire last 24 hours, and I imagine I’ve dropped roughly 12 pounds as well. I’m also wearing underwear today, which also doesn’t always happen, so I’m a conqueror of everything at the moment. Including a conqueror of avocados, which I did last night based off of this recipe.
Parmesan, Lime, Cholula Broiled Avocado
1 tablespoon Cholula, or desired hot sauce
1 tablespoon lime juice (or juice of 1 lime)
1/4 – 1/2 c. parmesan
Slice avocado in half, lengthwise, removing pit. Gently slice across the skin with a knife creating a criss-cross pattern. Top each half with lime juice and hot sauce. In each pit, place one quarter of the parmesan. Broil on high 2-3 minutes until cheese begins to melt and bubble. Remove from oven, add remainder of cheese and broil 3-4 more minutes until cheese has melted and lightly browned. If desired, top with additional hot sauce and a fried egg.
