Tastes + Treats

On Our Plates

One time I auditioned for America’s Next Top Model. Well, I tried to anyway. My college roommate and I went to the open casting call in Charlotte… she actually could have been cast. I went for the “experience.” It also happened to be the day that Bernie Mac died, and when the news rippled through the crowd, it was pretty somber.

Here’s the thing about trying out for junky reality television… it is super boring. And super long. We stood in line for about 5 hours or so, armed with our perfect go-see outfit, applications and requested photos of ourselves, shot in my Uptown apartment earlier in the week. The audition basically consists of waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. A few hours in, my non-model stomach started growling, so I began texting my sister asking her to bring us snacks. She declined. So I asked her to bring us lunch. She declined again. So I asked her to bring us anything edible. To which she replied, “If you’re going to be a model, you need to get used to being hungry.” So we left. Before we had even been seen or judged or cast.

And I vowed to never go hungry again. And I haven’t. Amen and amen.
img_2822Here’s what we’re eating this week (groceries purchased from HT Express Lane totaling $91):
Chicken Tikka Masala: I don’t usually love crockpot recipes that require hands on prep work, but this is worth it. I prepped everything yesterday morning while David was home playing with NB, threw it in the crockpot and spent the day drooling until we ate it at 6:45. Nora Beth also ate her fair share for her earlier dinner.
One Pot Spaghetti and Eggs: This is a leftover from last week’s meal plan that I never made.
Bulgogi: David’s new favorite and oh-so-easy dinner.
Crockpot Chicken Gnocchi Soup: Because in mind it’s already 50 degrees and the perfect soup weather. I made this several times last Fall and really, really liked it.
Chicken Paprika: Baby will never turn this down. Ever.
In A Hurry Shrimp & Grits: Giving this a go for the first time tonight… multiplying it times several, so we can all enjoy it. Shrimp is one of NB’s favorite foods of all time.
